John was born in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1948. He graduated in 1971 with a B.A from the University of Lethbridge. In 1978, he moved to the rural area outside of St. Bernardin, Ontario. Seeking an independent life in a “wilderness” area meant that John had to acquire skills other than ceramics such as building, electrical, and agricultural.
