CANADIAN POTTERY SERIES - JIM THOMSON
Jim Thomson (1953-2013) was born in the Ottawa area. In 1972, his interest in clay began. At the Vancouver School of Art, he was studying Painting when he switched to ceramics because of his interest in the forms that could be created. Jim was largely self-taught. However, he achieved a high level of acclaim and taught ceramics for many years at the Ottawa School of Art.
The pieces below show his rough textures. The glaze in the first bowl has pooled in the centre creating a reflecting pond look. Low relief birds, branched and flowers populate the surface of the second bowl and the white glaze has been allowed to crawl during the firing.
There is a large representation of Jim’s ceramics in the Permanent Collection of the Art Gallery of Burlington.
